Rain or shine, Suntec is here to make a difference

Rain or shine, Suntec is here to make a difference! We can’t tell you how good it feels to surprise these teachers with gifts that they could only dream of! Teachers don’t ask for much and when they do, we are happy to help. Thanks to some wonderful families here at Suntec we were able to grant wishes to some amazing teachers!

Carmen Brandt – John F Long

“I have been teaching 3rd grade for 8 years at John F Long. During that time I have helped start several different after-school clubs and summer camps. I strongly believe that everyone is good at something and should have the opportunity to find out what that is and explore different avenues. During all clubs and camps, we teach the importance of perseverance and hard work. We focus on 21st Century skills as well as skills necessary for the rest of their lives. We run multiple fitness clubs for all K through 5th-grade students. We have had a STEAM club where students learn many different problem-solving skills. I firmly believe that you can do anything you set your mind to, all you need is to ask.”

Perla Apodaca – John F Long

“I am in my 14th year of teaching, all here at John F. Long Elementary. Many students are raised in single-parent homes and have family challenges. A great part of my responsibility is to ensure that regardless of what is happening or not happening in a student’s home life, when they walk into my class they feel safe, cared for and listened to. In my opinion, that is the only way students will be ready to achieve academic success. I strive to open up the world to my students, so whenever we read about a new place, we take a “virtual field trip” using Google Earth. I try to engage their curiosity by teaching science and having hands-on experiments whenever it is possible. Next month I will have a group of former students, who are in their last year in college, come and speak to my current students about their journey to college.  I want to show my students that the choices they make right now, matters for their future.”

Sonia Cole – Isaac Imes Elementary

“I have been teaching 7th and 8th-grade math at Isaac E. Imes school for 15 years. I know our students all have a vision of what they want their lives to be like when they grow up, and I have the opportunity to help them make that vision a reality. Many of our students are not at grade level when they reach my math class in seventh grade, therefore, it is up to me to help them achieve enough growth to ensure they are successful in the next chapter of their lives. Our students know I am here to “take care” of them and to provide the best instruction I can. I am grateful to have the opportunity to make a difference!”
